Workshops champion needs for families with disabilities

Workshops to improve communications skills and tools to advocate for disabled family members have had great results for parents needing extra support.

Parent to Parent, a nationwide not-for-profit organisation, which supports families of babies, children, teens and adults with any type of disability or health impairment, ran a two day workshop "Champion Your Needs" on the 27th and 28th of February 2020 in Te Awamutu.

Thanks to support from the Waikato Farmers Trust, parents were provided with new skills and could connect with people in a similar situation. The feedback received from attendees was extremely positive:

"It was so nice to be surrounded by other parents who understood your struggles making the discussions relevant and extremely helpful."

The course also enabled an increased confidence in their ability to advocate for their child:

"The facilitator and course content gave me a range of useful information to take away and apply to difficult situations I deal with on a daily basis with my son."

Parent to Parent runs courses on a regular basis and continues to inform, educate and inspire families as they navigate their way through experiences with disability.
